Crash kills 3, injures 1 from same New Berlin family

The district attorney's office in Waukesha County is investigating a fatal car accident that killed three members of the same family and seriously injured a fourth relative. Police in New Berlin reported that one driver in the two-car motor vehicle accident might have lost control due to a medical problem.

A New Berlin couple, both age 49, and the husband's two siblings, a 54-year-old woman and 52-year-old man, were headed to a birthday event in Fort Atkinson around 9:40 a.m. The Ford Focus occupied by the family members was stopped at the intersection of West Glencove Parkway and South Sunny Slope Road. Police reports say a Chrysler 300 traveling northbound on South Sunny Slope Road veered right and struck the Ford. The Chrysler remained in motion, continuing 30 to 40 feet off the northeast side of the intersection through a pair of trees and into a yard.

The driver of the stationary Ford Focus, his wife and sister died in the accident. One accident victim, the driver's brother, was air-transported to Wauwatosa's Froedtert Hospital where he remains in intensive care.

New Berlin police determined that the Chrysler driver was not drugged or drunk at the time of the fatal crash. First reports indicated that two people were inside the Chrysler at the time of the crash. Police later clarified that the driver was traveling alone. The 36-year-old driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the accident and was rushed to Waukesha Memorial Hospital.

Police and the district attorney's office are trying to determine whether a separate medical event caused the Chrysler to swerve across the intersection.

While no amount of money can replace a loved one lost during a fatal car accident, compensation can help offset the devastating financial impact. Compensation recovered from motor vehicle accidents can help pay for medical and funeral expenses, not to mention any loss of income the injured or deceased victim contributed to the household.
