Four Amish children injured in car-buggy accident

In a recent news report, two Amish children suffered life-threatening injuries after being thrown from a horse and buggy during a Columbia County auto accident. Two more victims were ejected from the buggy and seriously hurt. According to a news report, they were on their way to school.

Sheriff's deputies say the horse and buggy was entering Barry Road from the driveway of Mishler's Country Store in Marcellon, when it was struck by an eastbound car. The only people inside the buggy at the time of the car accident were the four children, ages 7 to 13.

MedFlight transported the two children with life-threatening injuries to Madison's University of Wisconsin Hospital. The remaining two children and car driver were taken by ambulance to Divine Savior Healthcare in Portage.

A Marcellon-area resident said deputies claimed the car driver was a nurse who helped paramedics stabilize the young accident victims for emergency transport.

Neighbors of the victims relayed the medical conditions of the four children had stabilized by the afternoon of the Thursday morning accident. The local residents, who did not wish to be named, said one of the children hurt in the crash was set to be released from the hospital, but stayed behind to be close to his injured sister.

Residents speculated that sun glare and blind spots along the hilly road may have played factors in the crash. Initial police reports indicate that speed and alcohol did not contribute to the accident.
